Mari Amman

It is that time of the year in Tamil Nadu, the feminine month of Adi and austerity - when Sun transits Crab nebula.

When goddesses like Kalikambal, Mundaka-kanni, Mari amman and Bhadra-kali are worshipped.

Women throng Amman temples, sing, dance, prepare porridge in earthen pots over wooden fires, as offering.

Some people participate in rituals like walking on flowers of fiery charcoal, walking around temple carrying a pot of fire cushioned on neem leaves.

Weddings are avoided, married couples do not come together and retail brands offer exciting discounts.

Sen-kole; power wand

There seems to be no room, for second rank leadership in your party?

In our party, there is no protocol for succession.

There is no heir apparent, waiting for coronation.

But at some point in the future, someone will emerge.

Someone who can command grassroots support, like MGR, like me.         And that person will lead the party.

Non co-operative federalism?

Kannada speaking Kalabhras from Shrawanabelagola, who also spoke Sauraseni-prakrit, subdued the early Chozha, Chera, Pandyan kingdoms; and ruled  Tamil Nadu for 3 centuries.

Pallavas subdued Kalabhras in north Tamil Nadu.

Pandyan Kadunkone, the fierce regent, with his navy from east, subdued Kalabhras, in south Tamil Nadu.

Muth-tiraiyars - syndicate that collected tax from 3 kings - were subdued by Wijayalaya, in a medieval Chozha revival.

Insciiptions are scanty, of the Kalabhra era.

Most common name found in inscriptions, that document Kalabhra presence is, Ravi.

Farm relocated from Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve

The horticulture department is winding up it's 21 acre, 122 year d farm at  Kallar in Mettupalayam to facilitate movement of wild animals; following an order by the Madras High Court.

Kallar is an important migratory corridor in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve - NBR- , which is the single largest population of Asiatic elephants. Continuous forest area is cut by borders of Kerala, Tamil Naidu and Karnataka. If connectivity is cut wild animals would stray form their natural routes and stray into human habitats.

K Kalidass, founder of OSAI, an NGO said, " Not just shifting of government owned property; ew appeal to private building owners as well to remove structures from the habitat."
